FAQs

I purchased File Manager Pro in BlackBerry App World but didn't receive a Product Key.

BlackBerry App World records your Product Key and makes it available when you log into your My World account. To view your Product Key, open the App World application, click on the My World icon and select Log In from the menu.

After logging in, click on the File Manager Pro item to view its Details screen. Near the top of that screen, beneath the application name and version number, you should see a "License" field which displays your Product Key.

My Product Key isn't displayed in the My World account even though I purchased File Manager Pro.

In some case the system may fail to recognize that you've purchased the application. Typically this occurs after some type of device hard reset or an OS update. To restore My World to recognize your purchase, perform the following steps:

1. Using the App World application on your BlackBerry, click on the My World icon and select Log In from the menu to log into your account. Click on the File Manager Pro item to open the Details screen, and uninstall the application. If you have purchased multiple applications from App World in some cases you may need to uninstall all of them.

2. After the uninstall completes, temporarily pull the battery from your BlackBerry.

3. Log into your My World account again, click on the File Manager Pro item to open the Details screen, and reinstall the application.

After completing this process your My World account should display your Product Key in the "License" field near the top of the Details screen for File Manager Pro.

What BlackBerry devices are supported?

Any trackball, trackpad or touch screen BlackBerry smartphones running OS 4.3 or higher are supported by File Manager Pro. This list includes both SurePress (Storm) and non-SurePress (Torch) touch screens.

Is version 1.6 a free upgrade if I already purchased File Manager Pro?

Yes! Version 1.6 is a free upgrade for all users.

How do I select multiple files and folders?

There are two methods to select multiple files and/or folders. The first method is used to select a contiguous set of items. To do so, simply hold down the Shift key while scrolling the trackball.

The second method allows you to select an arbitrary set of items. For each item you wish to add to the selection, highlight it, press the Shift key and click the trackball.

On touch screen devices, select a range of files and folders using two fingers to highlight a group of items in the file list. To select an arbitrary item, use a double tap.

File Manager Pro allows you to freely combine these two methods, enabling you to easily create selections of any set of files and folders.

How do I add items to an existing Zip archive?

File Manager Pro makes working with Zip archive as easy as working with regular folders. To add new files and folders to an existing archive, simply select those items you wish to add and select the Copy menu item. When the popup file list screen is displayed, navigate to the Zip archive and select it as the destination.

You can also add those files and folders into a subfolder within the Zip archive. When selecting the destination in the file list screen simply open the archive as you would a folder, navigate to the desired folder and set it as the destination. You can even create a new folder during the Copy operation.

And with File Manager Pro's support for selecting multiple files and folders you can easily add groups of items to a Zip archive in a single operation.

The first time I view a picture as a thumbnail seems slow.

When you view a picture as a thumbnail File Manager Pro makes a copy of the original file and scales it to the display size you've select. The amount of time it takes to scale the file depends on how large the file is. After the scaling completes, it saves a copy so that the next time it can display the already scaled copy. The effect is that the first time you view a picture the rendering will take a little longer, but subsequent viewings will load very quickly.

File Manager Pro allows you to select small, medium or large thumbnails to be displayed. Each of these sizes use a different scaled picture, so if you change the display size of the thumbnail in the Options screen then the saved copies will need to be rescaled. However, when you change the label display the same scaled copies can be used. This allows you to freely change the label display without incurring any rendering delay.

Will File Manager Pro allow me to delete the preloaded media files?

Yes, to the extent that the operating system will allow third party applications to modify those files.

There is a lot of confusion about deleting the media files preloaded on BlackBerry smartphones. Whether you can delete these files using a third party application is entirely dependent on the file type and the model/OS combination. Some of the media files are "built-in" files, which are actually links to data contained in system cods. These system cod files will contain the data for multiple link files, and won't allow you to delete the individual files. File Manager Pro lists the "Built In" file attribute in the Properties screen to assist you in identifying these files.

The operating system may also prevent you from deleting some Forward Locked files. Forward Locked files are content that has been encrypted to the device, so that it is not accessible if moved to a different device. Whether deleting these files is allowed or restricted varies between device models and operating system versions. File Manager Pro lists the Forward Locked file attribute in the Properties screen as well.

In some cases you may be prevented from deleting the individual media files, but allowed to delete the folder that contains them. In these cases you can delete these files en masse only.

Why does the order of my Favorites items change?

Your Favorites is a "smart list" that detects which locations you visit most frequently. It tracks these locations and sorts the list accordingly. This further helps provide fast access to your most used folders, since you're most likely to re-visit the same folders that you've previously visited most often. As you continue to use File Manager Pro, the order of your Favorites will become established and you will likely find that the order changes infrequently.

When I download zip attachments, why do I sometimes get a warning that the file cannot be viewed on my BlackBerry device?

You can safely ignore this warning — all valid zip files you download from attachments can be opened with File Manager Pro. Some email programs assign a generic mime type when sending zip attachments. When these are received on your BlackBerry, the Messages application doesn't recognize them as zip files and so it displays this warning. You can save these files as you would any other attachment, with the only difference being that the Messages application won't automatically launch File Manager Pro for you.

The ability to download attachments to your BlackBerry device is available in OS 4.5 and higher.

When I launch File Manager Pro, it either does nothing or won't allow me to access the Media Card.

This is typically due to the application permissions preventing File Manager Pro from launching or reading the Media Card. To modify the permissions, from the Home screen open Settings > Options > Advanced Options > Applications. Scroll down the list, highlight File Manager Pro and then select "Edit Permissions" from the menu. In the Permissions screen, expand these sections and ensure that the specified values are set to Allow.

After completing the above, press the Escape key and select the Save button.
